You're listening to the Get Out N Drive podcast fueled by AMD with your host John CustomCarNerd Meyer and Jason OldCarrGuy Carr, we'll be bringing you gearheads, everything you've never wanted to know about cars and why they should be on the road and not in your garage. Are you ready to Get Out N Drive?
John
Get Out N Drive podcast. We are here at Day 2. MCACN 2024. We just came in a building and like 2 seconds afterwards, This Clay King was Cleaning up his car and you said this is your High school car.
Clay
I bought this car in 1990. I was 16 years old.
John
Wow, what does the 16 year old kid do with the 73? I know this one's dressed up a little a little early, but what? What do you do with a 73 CUDA or King of the street for a while in high school.
Clay
I actually had it. It ran thirteens when I first bought it first. Got it back together. It ran well.
John
OK.
Clay
First pass down the track around 14.55, me and my dad worked on it, you know, changed the heads, gearing and ended up running a 13.31 out of that 318 so.
John
Now was that was original. Drivetrain in the car or.
Clay
No, it had been changed before I bought it. It was at 318. Two barrel car. It was nothing really desirable. So I built it the way.
John
OK. OK. OK. OK.
Clay
I wanted it, yeah.
John
I see.
Clay
With all intent of racing it and driving on.
John
The street and and I like the way it is dressed up as an earlier CUDA. It's got 70 stuff on it and has a shaker and. Wow. I like the way the roll bar is very sneaky. It's interior color under hood, it's roll bar color and the the ties and everything are all body color. I I like that. That's pretty slick.
Clay
I had had a friend of mine, Tim Floyd, out of Kentucky. Built custom built the roll cage for. Me and the.
Speaker
What?
Clay
Goal of trying to keep this.
Speaker
So.
John
Right. So take us up to today like, I mean the car looks clean underneath everything. When did you get, when did you restore the car? When you get it restored, talk us through all of that.
Clay
It was probably it was close to a 10 year process.
John
Of being apart and being restored.
Clay
Being a part of new floor pans, rear frame rails, inner fenders, it's got a lot of new sheet metal.
John
Wow.
Clay
Friend of mine Luke Howard starting a Body Shop and he worked on the body lines for me and laid down the flawless.
John
OK.
Clay
Paint job and.
John
I like it.
Clay
It was. It was a. It was a long process, but the the results, it was worth it.
John
Yeah, yeah, I know. You built the car the way you want. Yes. Is this the original color of the car? What was the original color? Did have a vinyl top? What options? Were on the car, it had a.
Clay
Vinyl top. Originally I could tell you know. When we got to go on the body work.
Speaker
Mm-hmm.
Clay
I've never had a Fender tag for it, but it was kind of a mint light metallic green, just according to the evidence I've seen on the inside. When I bought the car, it was Corvette yellow guy. When I redid it.
John
OK.
Clay
OK. I had to go back.
John
Of course. Of course. Yeah. The Corvette yellow would be a little too bright for the car. Yeah.
Clay
And in it was. And this this is this is it fits the car good with the black vinyl top and went with the old school cragers on it for this show and.
John
Yeah, little little day 2 stuff. Yeah. So I like that. It's kind of sneaky talk us through drivetrain interior. What's in there today?
Clay
It's got a interior, you know, an original 1973. It came out with challenger parts car I had rear seat. I've got racing buckets in it. You know, a lot of a lot of sneaky stuff in interior. Kind of subtle, you know, taking that heater box and all of that stuff out of it. I don't drive it in the winter. Try to make it look as close to factory, but with some subtle racing changes. It's got a 508 Inch big block pump gas motor 10.75 : 1.
John
OK.
Clay
Fresh Frailey racing games out of Mount Sterling, KY, built those. I've got a heads on it that will Brock RPM performer RPM heads that Ben Hardy at Performance Motorsports in Maysville, KY and put together for me. Well, I did the final assembly at the top end. Uh. And TTI headers exhaust 373 gear and 83 quarter rear end 727 transmission that I've built.
John
I've been in the auto restoration industry for over 35 years. Man, have things changed. I remember scouring salvage yards to get body panels for rust repair, or my last resort. Poor quality aftermarket sheet metal. But then I found AMD AMD is trusted by restoration experts or providing high quality body panels, rust repair parts, glass trim and weather stripping. When I'm restoring an OB SGM truck, a Mopar muscle car, or a Ford dent sight pickup, AMD is my go to resource for reliable high quality parts. Visit automobiledirect.com and use the code GOND or a 10% discount exclusively for our listeners for a limited time AMD authentic restoration modern quality.
Clay
Tucker, Kentucky Dragway I want sportsman class. It's eight mile that day I was running six 70s, quarter mile record time for the cars at 1073. OK. And that's through the exhaust. It will run that on my slicks. It will run that on my ET St. drag drag car.
John
Nice. Nice. So that right here is a is is an Nos original shirt. Yes, yes. Oh, for goodness sake.
Clay
Wayne County Speed Shop and I have my first trophy that I won with this car 1991. It was November 3rd and 1991. Yeah, they ran at 1331. I ran E modified production. It was before the all the classes that went to bracket Style racing
John
Nice. Yeah.
Wow. So you and I heard. You have the same gal.
Clay
Yeah. Well, I had met my wife not long after. Yep. Yep.
John
And it's all close. You got the T-shirt and the glasses and the gal and you got the girl. Right after the car.
Clay
Been married to her for 30 years. We met in 1992.
John
Nice. Well, very good. Looks like you've kept tabs on everything and. That's great. I mean, car guys love old details and stuff of cars. You can look in the picture and I can see you as a nice young fella. So awesome. Well, your kudos. I'm glad you got it in your family. Thanks for hanging out with us for a bit.
Clay
Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
Jason
Like.
